Your Monthly Tax & Business Update – April 2026

✍️ Introduction

Spring is here, the new tax year has just begun, and with it comes a fresh set of rules, opportunities, and a few things to keep a close eye on.

At Jenner’s, our job is simple keep you informed, keep you compliant, and keep you one step ahead so there are no surprises.

Here’s what matters this month 👇

📌 1. New Tax Year Changes – What You Need to Know

From 6 April 2026, several changes have come into effect:

  • National Minimum Wage increase now in place
  • Employer National Insurance changes impacting payroll costs
  • Ongoing freeze in personal tax thresholds continues to drag more people into higher tax brackets
  • Dividend allowance remains low, increasing tax exposure for business owners

👉 What this means:
Even if your income hasn’t increased significantly, your tax bill might have.

💡 Jenners Tip:
Now is the time to review:

  • Salary vs dividends
  • Pension contributions
  • Business structure

Small tweaks now can save thousands over the year.

📌 2. Making Tax Digital (MTD) – Coming Closer for More Businesses

Making Tax Digital is no longer “coming soon” — it’s getting very real.

  • MTD for Income Tax is being rolled out next
  • Will affect sole traders and landlords over the income threshold
  • Quarterly digital reporting will become mandatory

👉 If your records are:

  • Spreadsheet-heavy
  • Paper-based
  • Or “a bit behind”

…this will become a problem quickly.

💡 Jenners Tip:
Don’t wait until it’s mandatory.
Getting set up on software like Xero now means:

  • Less stress
  • Better visibility
  • No last-minute panic

You need to speak to us NOW if you need help with MTD, we will not be taking on clients halfway through the year…you have been warned.

📌 3. Companies House Identity Verification – Action Required

This is a big one and catching a lot of people off guard.

Directors and people with significant control (PSC) will need to verify their identity. Read more in our blog on Companies House Identity Verification.

  • You’ll receive a unique personal code
  • This will be required for future filings
  • Without it, we cannot submit on your behalf

👉 This is about tightening fraud prevention but it does mean more admin.

💡 Jenners Tip:
When you receive your code:

  • Keep it safe
  • Share it securely with us
  • Don’t ignore it — delays could stop filings

📌 4. Cash Flow Still King (Especially Right Now)

With rising costs across:

  • Wages
  • Suppliers
  • Tax

Cash flow is under pressure for many businesses.

👉 The issue we’re seeing most:
Businesses are profitable on paper… but tight on cash.

💡 Jenners Tip:
Focus on:

  • Getting invoices out quickly
  • Chasing debt proactively
  • Knowing your numbers monthly (not yearly!)

If you don’t know your cash position you’re guessing. Book a meeting to discuss your cash position today.

This Month’s Q&A
