January 2026 tax deadlines and Companies House ID verification reminder for UK business owners

📌 In This Month’s News

As we step into 2026, January 2026 tax deadlines are critical this month for business owners, directors and self-employed individuals. There are two non-negotiable compliance requirements this month, alongside practical steps you can take now to protect your cash flow and avoid unnecessary stress later in the year.

This month we’re covering:

  • Companies House ID verification – action required
  • 31 January Self Assessment filing and payment deadline
  • Managing January cash flow
  • Common questions we’re being asked this month

Companies House ID Verification – Action Required

Companies House has introduced mandatory identity verification for company directors and people with significant control (PSCs). This change directly affects how we are able to act for you.

Once you complete the verification process, you will receive a personal verification code.

This code:

  • Is unique to you
  • Cannot be reissued
  • Must be treated as an important legal document
  • Must be shared with Jenner’s

Without this code:

  • We cannot act for you
  • We cannot file Confirmation Statements
  • You cannot legally act as a director
  • Companies House may apply penalties or strike off your company

💡 Jenner’s Tip:
Verify your ID as early as possible, store your code securely, and send it to us as soon as you receive it. Leaving this too late could prevent us from meeting statutory deadlines on your behalf.

31 January – Self Assessment Filing & Payment Deadline

31 January is the final deadline for:

  • Filing your Self Assessment tax return
  • Paying your balancing payment for the previous tax year
  • Paying your first payment on account (where applicable)

It’s important to remember that filing your return does not mean your tax has been paid both must be completed by 31 January to avoid penalties and interest.

If you’re unsure what you owe, or you’re concerned about making payment, speak to us as soon as possible. There are often more options available before the deadline than after it.

💡Jenner’s Tip:
If you’re unsure what you owe, struggling to pay, or simply want peace of mind, contact us as soon as possible. Early conversations give us more options to help you manage your tax position and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Managing Cash Flow in January

January can be a challenging month for cash flow, particularly following Christmas and with tax payments due.

A few practical steps can help:

  • Review your bank balance and upcoming commitments early
  • Keep tax funds separate from day-to-day spending where possible
  • Avoid delaying conversations that could lead to bigger problems later

💡 Jenner’s Tip:
A short conversation now can prevent costly issues later. Book a meeting in February to discuss with us (01432 379988) .

Q. What happens if I miss the 31 January deadline?
Late filing and late payment both result in penalties and interest, which increase the longer the delay continues.
